Downtown San Diego's Gaslight Quarter is the place to go for great shopping, amazing restaurants and an exciting nightlife. The neighborhood covers 16 blocks and is a mix of sleek, modern architecture and historic Victorian buildings. Museums, historic tours and over 100 retails shops will keep you busy during the day. When the sun sets, be prepared to stay out all night at the different nightclubs, bars and music venues.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the best place to check out, what else -- sunsets. Arrive early in the day to explore the tide pools and bluffs. If you want to feel like a local, bring a kite to fly. Whale watching from the cliffs is possible during early spring and of course, spectacular sunsets most evenings.
Belmont Park in Mission Beach is half retro theme park and half modern hangout. Constructed in 1925, the park still has some of the original architecture along with old-fashioned carnival rides and arcades. It is also home to simulated wave machines, nightclubs and eight restaurants. One of the last beach and boardwalk experiences left in California, with something for everyone.
San Diego is known for its tacos and the La Playa Taco Shop is one of the best in the city. This is a small hole-in-wall neighborhood joint that never disappoints with its traditional Mexican food. The prices are reasonable and the ingredients are always fresh.
For those ex-New Yorkers there is only one place to go for a guaranteed good slice of thin crust pizza, Bronx Pizza. This cash-only establishment, in the neighborhood of Hillcrest, offers up to 18 different pizza combinations such as pesto, eggplant and ricotta.
